A history of the rise and progress of the arts of design in the United States
William Dunlap's 1834 account of American painters, engravers and architects, reissued in 1918 by Boston publisher C. E. Goodspeed with editing by Frank W. Bayley for collectors and art historians. Halftone plates reproduce oil and miniature portraits of artists and their sitters — dark grounds, oval vignettes, high collars and lace caps — giving designers period likenesses and soft tonal frames.
