Italian backgrounds
Edith Wharton's 1905 collection of Italian travel essays, published in New York by Charles Scribner's Sons for American readers touring Italy's lesser-known towns and churches, with pen-and-ink drawings by Ernest C. Peixotto. The plates are loose line sketches of hill-town streets, baroque church facades, carved doorways with stone lions, and market squares seen from above, useful for architectural line detail, crosshatched stonework, and small figures at building scale.
