Historic styles of ornament
A chromolithographic survey of ornament by the German designer Heinrich Dolmetsch, issued in English by Batsford in London in 1898 for architects, decorators and craft workers copying historic pattern. The plates group motifs by period and technique — arabesque panels, illuminated manuscript borders with medallion portraits, painted grotesque brackets with swags and masks, and grids of repeating damask and fleur-de-lis wallpaper patterns — printed in flat opaque colour with gold, giving ready-made tiling repeats, border strips and corner fillers.
