Inside Out Library

Art and artists of our time

Cook, Clarence, 1828-1900 · 1888 · New York, S. Hess · 232 pictures

A survey of nineteenth-century European and American painting written by the American critic Clarence Cook and issued in New York by S. Hess in 1888 for an art-buying general readership. The plates are halftone and photogravure reproductions of salon paintings—historical death scenes on staircases, village sewing schools, peasant interiors and crowded outdoor gatherings—with soft grey tonal range, heavy shadow, and dense multi-figure staging useful for period costume reference and grouped-figure composition.
