Art: its laws, and the reasons for them
Samuel P. Long's 1871 treatise on aesthetics, published in Boston by Lee and Shepard for general readers and art students of the period. Wood-engraved figures illustrate the classical orders — fluted shafts, Corinthian capitals with acanthus, molded bases and entablature cornices — rendered in dense parallel-line shading that reads well as isolated black-and-white silhouettes.
