The arts in the Middle Ages, and at the period of the Renaissance
A Victorian survey of medieval and Renaissance decorative art by the French antiquarian Paul Lacroix ("Bibliophile Jacob"), issued in English by Chapman and Hall in London in 1875 with James Dafforne's editing, aimed at general readers, collectors and designers. The 427 wood engravings copy manuscript miniatures, carved ivories, tomb sculpture, seals, enamels, armour and goldsmiths' work, giving clean outline versions of heraldic knights, arcaded figure registers and strapwork mirror frames with caryatids and grotesque masks.
