The materials of the painter's craft in Europe and Egypt : from earliest times to the end of the XVIIth century, with some account of their preparation and use
A technical history of pigments, binders and grounds by the Scottish chemist A. P. Laurie, published in 1910 by T. N. Foulis in London and Edinburgh for painters, students and restorers. The colour plates sample the tradition it describes: an octagonal Florentine birth tray with ships and dancing figures, a Flemish book-of-hours page with scrolling acanthus border and Latin text, an Egyptian tomb offering scene in red ochre and white, and a pale knight-and-boat watercolour.
