Famous paintings as seen and described by famous writers
An anthology of writings on European paintings, compiled and translated by Esther Singleton for Dodd, Mead of New York in 1907 and aimed at general readers and gallery-goers. The plates are monochrome halftones of Old Master canvases and altarpieces, heavy with shadow and often reduced to silhouetted figure groups: a night Nativity lit from the manger, tiers of upturned portrait heads, an arched panel with a painted vine border, useful as dark tonal fields, cropped face clusters, and period costume silhouettes.
