A scholarly survey of Italian painting by J. A. Crowe and G. B. Cavalcaselle, revised by S. Arthur Strong and issued by John Murray in London in 1903 for art historians, collectors and students. The plates are halftone photographs of early Christian and medieval frescoes, mosaics and panels from Roman churches and Italian galleries, supplying enthroned Madonnas, apse compositions, haloed saints in rows, and heavily worn, high-contrast wall surfaces useful as texture and figure sources.
