The art of painting, in all its branches : methodically demonstrated by discourses and plates, and exemplified by remarks on the paintings of the best masters, and their perfections and oversights laid open
Gérard de Lairesse's Dutch painting treatise, translated and printed in London in 1738 for painters and students, sets out rules of composition, light and decorum with engraved demonstration plates by John Frederick Fritsch. The plates show classical figure groups, paired right-and-wrong arrangements stacked two to a page, and lightly etched outline studies within ruled borders, useful as loose linear figure reference and framed-panel layouts.
