The grammar of painting and engraving
Charles Blanc's treatise on the theory and technique of painting and engraving, translated from the French Grammaire des arts du dessin and issued in 1874 by Hurd and Houghton for American art students, amateurs and collectors. The plates are line facsimiles after old-master drawings — single figures in turban and loose robes, seated draped figures, a lunette-shaped banquet interior in steep perspective, and Raphael's entombment group — giving designers open hatched outline work, drapery studies and reusable figure poses.
