How to make type talk; the relation of typography to voice modulation: basic principles as developed and proven in actual practice

Lewis, Barnard Joseph, 1888- · 1914 · Boston, The Stetson press, inc · 8 pictures

A 1914 trade manual by Barnard Joseph Lewis, issued by the Stetson Press in Boston, arguing that typography carries tone of voice, aimed at printers and advertising men. Its plates repeat one woodcut-style vignette of two men in seventeenth-century dress raising tankards, shown in black and in red on tinted stocks, alongside specimen pages with script display lettering, ornamental rules and small ship and press cuts.
