How to study pictures by means of a series of comparisons of paintings and painters from Cimabue to Monet, with historical and biographical summaries and appreciations of the painters' motives and methods
Charles H. Caffin's art-appreciation manual, published by the Century Co. in New York in 1905, pairs paintings from Cimabue to Monet for side-by-side comparison by general readers and students. The 59 plates are halftone reproductions of European paintings—Watteau fêtes champêtres, Delacroix's Dante and Virgil, fresco fragments, crowded interiors—usable as soft grey-toned figure groups, landscape silhouettes, and captioned plate layouts.
