An 1871 instruction manual from Dana Bickford, printed in Hartford by Case, Lockwood & Brainard, teaching owners of the Bickford family knitting machine to set it up and make garments on it. Wood engravings show finished knitted jackets, mittens, stockings and wristlets in dense black, plus close-up swatches where ribbing, cables and braided stitches read as repeating texture for patterns and grounds.
