Italian painters;
Giovanni Morelli's critical studies of Italian Renaissance painting, translated by Constance Jocelyn Ffoulkes and issued by John Murray in London in 1892 for connoisseurs, collectors and gallery scholars testing attributions by details of hand and ear. The plates are photographic reproductions of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century drawings and paintings, printed in warm sepia with visible paper tone: pen-hatched nudes, winged putti, seated Madonnas, and cropped studies of hands, ears and drapery folds usable as figure references or textured cut-outs.
