Les anglais peints par eux-mêmes : par les sommités littéraires de l'Angleterre
A French edition of the English series of social types, with Kenny Meadows's character portraits and text adapted by Émile de la Bédollière, issued in Paris by Léon Curmer in 1840 for middle-class readers buying illustrated part-works. The plates are wood-engraved half-length figures in profile or three-quarter view, built from dense parallel hatching with blank paper for faces and hands, giving designers ready-cut vignettes of hats, greatcoats, waistcoats and exaggerated noses and chins.
