Les Français peints par eux-mêmes
A French anthology of social types, first issued in the 1840s and reprinted by Furne in Paris in 1853, with short essays and wood-engraved figures by Gavarni and his contemporaries for urban middle-class readers. Single figures stand isolated on white paper — waiter, barrister, ragpicker, seated gossips — drawn in loose hatching that reads well as cut-out silhouettes and spot art.
