The microscope and its revelations
A Victorian microscopy manual by William Benjamin Carpenter, revised by W. H. Dallinger and issued in Philadelphia by Blakiston in 1891 for students, physicians, and amateur microscopists. Its 687 wood-engraved figures show cell clusters, muscle and nerve fibres, tissue sections, and diatoms in fine hatched line, giving designers dense repeating textures and small labelled diagrams with letter keys.
