The microscope and its revelations

Carpenter, William Benjamin, 1813-1885 · 1881 · Philadelphia : Blakiston · 554 pictures

A nineteenth-century handbook of microscopy by the English physician William Benjamin Carpenter, issued in Philadelphia by Blakiston in 1881 for students, physicians and amateur microscopists. The 554 wood engravings render magnified tissue, mineral and plant sections as dense hatching and fine outline: convoluted brain folds, radiating crystal structures, fibre bundles and cellular grids, useful as abstract line texture and pattern fill.
