Modern french masters; a series of biographical and critical reviews by American artists
A survey of nineteenth-century French painters, edited by John C. Van Dyke with essays by American artists, published by the Century Co. in New York in 1896 for collectors and art students. The plates are halftone and wood-engraved reproductions of paintings: cattle in pasture, Puvis de Chavannes figure groups, dim interiors with reclining women, and wide tonal landscapes, useful for soft grey gradients, silhouetted trees, and captioned plate layouts.
