The mystery of Edwin Drood
Charles Dickens's unfinished final novel, published in monthly parts by Chapman and Hall in London in 1870, with plates drawn by Luke Fildes for a general Victorian reading public. The engravings are close-packed figure scenes — a man slumped by a lamp-lit desk, couples talking at garden gates, crowds on a quay — built from fine parallel hatching, with useful crinolines, frock coats, top hats, iron railings and cathedral-town doorways.
