Narrative and critical history of America
A multi-volume scholarly history of America edited by Justin Winsor and published in Boston and New York by Houghton Mifflin in 1884, addressed to historians, librarians and map students. The plates reproduce oval portrait busts in profile, engraved facsimiles of maps and charts, autograph signatures and title pages, all rendered in stipple and line on plain grounds that cut out cleanly for use as vignettes, endpapers or archival-style spot art.
