Narrative and critical history of America
Justin Winsor's multi-volume scholarly history of the Americas, issued by Houghton, Mifflin in Boston and New York from 1884 for libraries and historians, reproduces early maps, documents and portraits as evidence for its essays. The plates are line facsimiles of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century charts: hatched mountain ranges, stippled coastlines, engraved cartouches, wind-rose radials and dense italic place-names, useful as texture, border and lettering sources.
