Old Dutch and Flemish masters
A 1911 Century Co. volume in which the American wood engraver Timothy Cole reproduced paintings by Dutch and Flemish masters, with commentary by the art historian John C. Van Dyke, issued in New York for art students and picture collectors. The thirty plates are tonal wood engravings after Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Ter Borch and others: seventeenth-century portraits and dim interiors built from fine cross-hatching, with deep blacks, lace collars, fur and candlelit faces that supply ready-made figure cutouts and dark-ground textures.
