Painting in the Far East : an introduction to the history of pictorial art in Asia especially China and Japan
Laurence Binyon's survey of Chinese and Japanese painting, published in New York by Longmans, Green in 1913 for Western students and collectors new to Asian art. The 42 halftone plates reproduce hanging scrolls and wall paintings in soft grey tones: robed bodhisattvas with haloes and trailing drapery, ink-brushed monks and sages, figures among pines and clouds, many with the mottling and losses of aged silk.
