Painting, Spanish and French
A survey of Spanish and French painting by Gerard William Smith, published by Scribner in New York in 1890 for general readers and art students. The 94 plates are tonal wood engravings after paintings: battle scenes with cavalry and pikes, court interiors with tiled floors and hanging tapestries, vaulted church interiors, and allegorical groups of armoured figures, horses and winged children, useful for crowd staging, drapery and architectural backdrops in grey halftone.
