Rural essays
Rural essays collects the horticultural and landscape-gardening journalism of A. J. Downing, edited by George William Curtis and published in New York in 1853 for American homeowners and garden planters. Wood engravings show single specimen trees in silhouette — cedars, beeches, bare flowering magnolias — plus cottage plans and grounds, giving designers clean tree profiles with dense stippled foliage against blank ground.
