Rural essays
Collected essays on landscape gardening, rural architecture and trees by American horticulturist A. J. Downing, edited by George William Curtis and published in New York in 1853 for country homeowners and garden readers. Wood-engraved vignettes give whole-tree portraits in dense hatching — cedar, elm, ivy-wrapped trunks — usable as silhouettes, textured fills, or spot ornaments.
