The steam engine familiarly explained and illustrated; with an historical sketch of its invention and progressive improvement; its applications to navigation and railways; with plain axioms for railway speculators
A popular technical primer on the steam engine by Dionysius Lardner, revised by James Renwick and issued in Philadelphia by Carey & Hart in 1849 for general readers and railway investors. The plates are numbered line diagrams of cylinders, pistons, valves, boilers and pulleys, some tinted with flat washes for water and metal, printed on tanned paper — useful for sectional cutaways and labelled mechanical parts.
