The stones of Venice
John Ruskin's study of Venetian Gothic architecture, published in New York by J. Wiley in 1851 for English-speaking readers of architectural history and criticism. The plates are wood-engraved sections and profiles, drawn by Ruskin, where dense horizontal hatching becomes solid mass against blank paper, yielding curved silhouettes, cornice contours and lettered figure keys usable as abstract shapes or line-texture fills.
