Studies in pictures; an introduction to the famous galleries
An introduction to looking at paintings in the major European galleries, written by American art historian John C. Van Dyke and published by Scribner's in New York in 1907 for students and museum visitors. The plates are halftone reproductions of Renaissance and Baroque canvases — altarpieces, kneeling donor portraits, crowded processions, a barrel-vaulted church interior with scattering figures — printed in soft grey tones with heavy shadow, useful for figure groupings, drapery masses and deep perspective architecture.
