The theory of effect : embracing the contrast of light and shade, of colour and harmony

Bengo, John, Hinckley, C. T · 1851 · Philadelphia : J.W. Moore · 12 pictures

A drawing manual on light and shade, colour and harmony, written by John Bengo with wood engravings by C. T. Hinckley, published in Philadelphia by J. W. Moore in 1851 for art students and amateur draughtsmen. The plates are small landscape vignettes built from ruled horizontal hatching and blunt black masses — a bridge over rapids, a gabled church wall, a squat ruined tower against banded cloud, a post casting a long shadow — useful as compact tonal studies, skies made of parallel lines, and silhouette-heavy scenery.
