Recollections of Hartz 705 or “contrate” wheel,1 which in turn is connected with the arbor, or spindle, on which the two little wheels, a a, revolve. From about half the circumference of the contrate wheel the teeth are cut away for a reason that will presently appear. … Fig. 259. trate wheel comes into operation. During this period, though the train is still running, no movement is communicated to the little wheels a a , which accordingly come to a temporary standstill. When the toothed portion of the contrate wheel is again reached, their movement recommences.…
