The castles of England, their story and structure
A two-volume antiquarian survey of English castles by Sir James Dixon Mackenzie, published by Macmillan in New York in 1896 for antiquaries, architectural students and travellers. The plates are halftone photographs of keeps, curtain walls, gatehouses and ivy-covered ruins set in fields and hedgerows, useful for masonry texture, silhouettes of towers against blank sky, and coarse grey halftone grain.
