Apotheosis and after life : three lectures on certain phases of art and religion in the Roman Empire

Strong, Eugénie, 1860-1943 · 1915 · London : Constable · 41 pictures

Three lectures by the archaeologist Eugénie Strong on Roman funerary and imperial art, published in London by Constable in 1915 for classical scholars and students of religion. The plates are photographs of carved marble — sarcophagus fronts, altars, grave stelae and relief panels — showing chariot ascents, reclining figures, garlands, acanthus scrolls and columned frames, with deep shadow that makes the carving read as flat pattern usable for borders and silhouettes.
