Scientific amusements
Gaston Tissandier's collection of home science demonstrations and parlour tricks, translated by Henry Frith and published in London and New York by Ward, Lock & Co. in 1890 for amateur experimenters and families. Wood engravings show hands manipulating glasses, jars, retorts and stands against dense cross-hatched darkness, useful for isolated apparatus silhouettes, dramatic tonal backgrounds and gesture vignettes.
