The historical monuments of France
A survey of French medieval and Renaissance architecture written by the American antiquarian James Frothingham Hunnewell and published in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin in 1898 for travellers and students of cathedrals. The wood engravings and halftones show west fronts, portals, vaulted interiors and chateau silhouettes, giving designers tracery patterns, rose windows, arcaded elevations and dense linear textures usable as ornament or architectural line art.
