Japanese homes and their surroundings
Edward S. Morse's 1885 survey of Japanese domestic architecture, published by Harper in New York for American readers curious about house construction, interiors and daily custom in Japan. Morse's own pen drawings record entryways, sliding screens, tatami rooms, thatched and tiled roof ridges and joinery details in clean outline with light hatching, giving designers a large stock of line-drawn architectural elements, wood-grain and matting textures, and roof silhouettes.
