The Locomotive
The Locomotive was the monthly journal of the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, issued from 1867 in Hartford, Connecticut for engineers, boiler owners and insurance inspectors. Its plates pair coarse halftones of failed boiler plate—punched rivet holes, pitted and grooved metal, split shells—with measured line drawings of rivet spacing, giving designers gritty textural fields and dry dimensioned diagrams of dot grids.
