A new history of painting in Italy, from the second to the sixteenth century
A scholarly survey of Italian painting from the second to the sixteenth century by Joseph Archer Crowe and Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle, published by John Murray in London in 1864 for connoisseurs, students and collectors. The plates are pure outline engravings after frescoes and altarpieces, recording crowded processions, architectural interiors and floating figure groups as unshaded contour drawing usable as line art, tracing stock or figure reference.
