Paintings of the Louvre, Italian and Spanish
A 1905 New York gallery handbook by Arthur Mahler, published by Doubleday, Page, surveying the Italian and Spanish paintings of the Louvre for English-speaking museum visitors and students. The 145 plates are dark halftone photographs of panel and canvas paintings—enthroned Madonnas, nativities, saints in armour, kneeling donors—with heavy shadow and soft grain that suit high-contrast reworking, silhouetted figure groups, and cut-out details of drapery, angels, and architectural thrones.
