Painting in France, after the decline of classicism. An essay
An essay by Philip Gilbert Hamerton on nineteenth-century French painting after classicism, reissued in Boston by Little, Brown in 1901 for art students and collectors. Thirteen halftone plates reproduce genre and salon paintings: women in crinolines by a riverbank, a kneeling suitor, a fireside group, a peasant girl in apron and cap, all soft-edged tonal grays useful for figure silhouettes and period costume.
