Emancipation and the freed in American sculpture ; a study in interpretation
Freeman Henry Morris Murray's 1916 survey, self-published in Washington, D.C., examines how American monuments and statuary depicted emancipation and Black subjects, written for readers and critics of race in art. Halftone photographs record bronze and plaster groups, allegorical seated figures, relief panels and monument bases, offering figure poses, drapery, wreaths and pedestal architecture in strong tonal contrast.
