Fifty years of modern painting, Corot to Sargent

Phythian, John Ernest, 1858- · 1908 · London, G. Richards · 39 pictures

A survey of European and American painting from Corot to Sargent, written by John Ernest Phythian and published by Grant Richards in London in 1908 for general readers and students following the course of nineteenth-century art. The 41 plates are monochrome halftone reproductions of paintings, including Pre-Raphaelite figure groups, Daumier's Don Quixote riding a bare ridge, hazy wooded riverbanks, and rural genre scenes, offering soft grey tonal masses, silhouetted riders and grouped figures in drapery.
