French art, classic and contemporary, painting and sculpture
W. C. Brownell's critical survey of French painting and sculpture from the classic schools to his own day, issued in New York by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1901 for American readers and collectors. The 48 plates are soft grey halftones after paintings and statues — massed nudes and drapery, a bronze group of hooded burghers, a courtyard scene with fighting cocks — useful for figure groupings, cloth folds, and tonal backgrounds.
