French portrait engraving of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries
A survey of French portrait engraving by Thomas Head Thomas, published in London by Bell in 1910 for print collectors and students of engraving. The plates reproduce seventeenth- and eighteenth-century engraved busts of kings, ministers, soldiers and magistrates, set in oval, octagonal and rectangular borders with lettered inscriptions running around the frame, offering wigs, lace cravats, armour, and ready-made framing devices with curved caption bands.
