An introduction to the study of Gothic architecture
A teaching manual of medieval English building styles written and published by the Oxford bookseller and antiquary John Henry Parker in 1861, aimed at students, clergy and amateur church-visitors learning to date a building by its details. The wood-engraved plates isolate windows, arcades, capitals, mouldings and plan sections in clean outline with hatched shading and occasional measured profiles below, giving designers a reference set of Norman and Gothic arch forms, tracery patterns and masonry textures.
