Portolan charts; their origin and characteristics, with a descriptive list of those belonging to the Hispanic society of America
Edward Luther Stevenson's 1911 study of portolan charts, published in New York for the Hispanic Society of America, catalogues medieval and Renaissance sailing charts held in its collection. Plates reproduce manuscript charts in high-contrast facsimile: radiating rhumb-line webs, ornate compass roses, scale bars, ragged vellum edges, coastlines crowded with place-names, and small painted flags, towns, and ships.
