A treatise on the art of painting, in all its branches; accompanied by seventy engraved plates, and exemplified by remarks on the paintings of the best masters ..
An English edition of Gérard de Lairesse's painting manual, issued in London by Edward Orme in 1817 with text revised by W. M. Craig and seventy plates engraved after Lairesse's own designs, made to instruct painters and drawing students. The etchings run in matched pairs that show one classical scene twice under different light, shadow and grouping, giving designers draped figures, colonnades and arches, garden urns, ruined walls and finely hatched foliage, plus ready-made before-and-after comparison layouts.
