The study and criticism of Italian art
Bernard Berenson's collected connoisseurship essays on Italian Renaissance painting, published in London by G. Bell in 1903 for scholars, collectors and dealers arguing attributions. The 41 plates are halftone photographs of paintings, heavy in shadow with blown highlights: candlelit and nocturnal Nativities, kneeling donors and saints in landscape, cropped half-length portraits, useful as sources of dramatic chiaroscuro figure groups, drapery masses and grainy tonal texture.
